‘Nearby Unlock’ feature on the Pixel Watch!

Google stated at CES 2022 that Wear OS 3 smartwatches will be able to unlock Android phones in close proximity using the new ‘Nearby Unlock’ feature in the coming months. Early in June, 9to5Google published data indicating that the feature will be available on the Pixel Watch as well and that it will be branded “Smart Unlock.”

Given that the Pixel Watch will run Wear OS 3, it’s a foregone conclusion that the feature will be included. Nonetheless, Esper’s Mishaal Rahman has discovered additional details and animations concerning the choice, and it may be renamed.

Google has already stated that the functionality will only operate on eligible Wear OS 3 watches, it’s safe to assume that the Pixel Watch will be the first to receive it. In Google Play Services beta version 22.22, the feature was mentioned alongside the Google Pixel Watch app. The following is how it was described:

To set up your watch for Smart Unlock, connect it to your phone with the Google Pixel Watch app. Your watch and phone must be connected to use Smart Unlock.

Users will be able to use their watches to securely unlock their Android phones. For the feature to work, the watch must be unlocked, on the wrist, and close to the phone. Users will receive a notification on their watch once the phone is unlocked. They can use it to relock the phone by tapping it. The Nearby Unlock feature can also be turned on and off from the phone’s settings.
