Google Message will now also remind you about the upcoming Birthday. Based on a feature that first appeared in Gmail in 2018, Google began using nudges to remind us to respond to those old text messages that had gone unanswered for too long. For people who have recently turned one year older, a new type of reminder is now appearing.
When you open Messages, you may notice a few small visual clues about the birthday boy or girl, such as a small cake image on their avatar, a simple “Happy Birthday” line below their most recent message, and a small banner advertising their birthday in their message history — this is the actual nudge.
Birthdays are sourced from your contact list, so unless you’ve been diligently seeking out birth dates like an identity thief, there may not be many of these popping up.
If you don’t want to receive birthday reminders via Google Messages, you can easily turn them off. Toggle off Birthday reminders by going to Settings from the overflow menu, then Suggestions -> Nudges.
