Qualcomm will adopt the AV1 codec in the next SoC generation.

Google uses the AV1 codec in YouTube streaming, which ensures high-quality video streaming, however, the majority of the Android smartphones do not support it, because it has never been implemented on the SoC level. But this time around, Qualcomm is planning to do so with the next-generation SoC.

As per the Protocol newsletter, Qualcomm is already planning to do so by the next iteration of their Snapdragon 8 Gen x series. It means we might see the AV1 codec support out of the box with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which is due to launch in 2023.

On the other hand, the lacking competitor has already implemented the feature on their SoC. Samsung’s Exynos 2100 is the first SoC to implement the AV1 codec, which continues today and is also supported by Exynos 2200 as well.

Thanks to the low bandwidth high-quality streaming capability of the codec, even Netflix is planning to use the codec in their services.
