First In-House Google Smartwatch in making!

Google, Miscellaneous, Pixel, Wear OS

Looks like Google is finally working on its First-ever In-House Google Smartwatch. Thanks to reports from Insider, we finally have some insights into this upcoming device launching next year in 2020.

The watch is codenamed “Rohan” but an official name yet to be decided. While Google did purchase Fitbit earlier this year, the smartwatch is going to be a product from the Google Pixel hardware team.

Like the Pixel handsets, this smartphone will serve as an example for both consumers and hardware partners of what Google’s software can do when given the right hardware. According to The Verge’s source, the device will cost more than a Fitbit and will compete more directly with the Apple Watch.

The watch will have basic fitness tracking features like step counting and a heart rate monitor. Google is also said to be working on a Fitbit integration into Wear OS (codenamed “Nightlight”) for when it launches.

Apart from this, Google is also currently reinventing its smartwatch platform with Wear OS 3. This version of the OS was developed in partnership with Samsung, merging the Tizen platform into Google’s own. However, Wear OS 3 is currently only available on Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4, which runs a heavily customized version of the new operating system that foregoes most of Google’s services and apps in favor of Samsung’s own.
