Google being Google and Google likes pulling plugs. This time, the Hide full URL feature from Google Chrome, on which Google was working for four years, and now Google is just SHIFT+Del’ing the project finally.
Full URL hiding on Google Chrome doesn’t help with the security.
Although Google included this feature on the Chrome 86, and a few iterations here and there, made its way to the canary builds but never made it to the stable builds. For Google, this feature was build in such a way that the user can clearly see malicious URLs and refrain from doing any activity on such websites.
We’re implementing this simplified domain display experiment so that we can conduct qualitative and quantitative research to understand if it helps users identify malicious websites more accurately.
Well, what they anticipated, never helped. The feature never made any difference. And the way Google was implementing this feature, didn’t pass the security metrics, thus being scraped out of the existence entirely.
Delete simplified domain experiment. This experiment didn’t move relevant security metrics, so we’re not going to launch it. 🙁
