Apple has surpassed Samsung to become World’s Largest Smartphone Manufacturer in the fourth quarter of 2020. According to a market study by Gartner, Apple hasn’t achieved the title since 2016. Apple sold more than 80 million iPhones in Q4 2020. The numbers were perhaps driven by the first ever 5G powered iPhones.
“Even as consumers remained cautious in their spending and held off on some discretionary purchases, 5G smartphones and pro-camera features encouraged some end users to purchase new smartphones or upgrade their current smartphones in the quarter.”Anshul Gupta, Senior Research Director at Gartner
When compared to data from 2019, Apple sold 10 Million more iPhones in 2020 and increased its market share by 15%. Samsung saw a decrease in its market share by 11.8% and sold 8 Million fewer devices compared to the same time last year.
In Q1 2021, Apple saw its largest number of iPhone upgrades ever, according to Tim Cook. The availability of lower end smartphones such as the iPhone 12 Mini with its affordable $699 price tag is also a deciding factor among customers looking to upgrade to a newer phone.
