Gionee, a subsidy of Shenzhen Zhipu Technology Co. Ltd. has been caught for planting a Trojan Horse’ via a system update. The Chinese court has passed a verdict and thus proving Gionee guilty of the crime. As per the reports, the company has implanted the virus in over 20 million devices.
The ‘Trojan Horse’ placed by Gionee is just a combination of unsolicited ads and many malicious functions running under the hood, even without the user’s knowledge. Interestingly, this is not any mistake by the company. Instead, they did this purposefully, thus passing the ‘Trojan horse’ via a system update. The new system update introduced a new app called ‘Story lock Screen’ which is an implementation of Glance Wallpaper or Lock Screen Stories by Samsung. The very first device infected with this virus was discovered in December 2018. Since then to October 2019, the adware has brought around $4.2 million, infecting 21.75 million devices in the process.
The Chinese court has found three people guilty of the crime: Xu Li, Zhu Ying, Jia Zhengqiang, and Pan Qi. All these three will serve 3 to 3.5 years of a prison sentence, along with CNY 300,000 equivalent to $30,000 as a fine.
This thing generally happens with several cheap Chinese smartphones. Other than Gionee, many other companies are proven guilty. This list includes Infinix and Tecno.
