Qualcomm just held its annual Snapdragon Tech Summit where it announced its new 2021 flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 888. With this powerful chipset, we will see significant improvement in 5G connectivity, gaming, and GPU performance.
This flagship chipset comes with the Third generation X60 5G modem by Qualcomm. This modem has global Sub-6 and mmWave connectivity, global multi-SIM, and dynamic spectrum sharing. Meanwhile, the modem will also allow for 5G carrier aggregation between Sub-6 and mmWave bands. This, in turn, will allow carriers like T-Mobile to deliver better speeds and provide significantly better connectivity.
While earlier Qualcomm used the 7nm node in its modem for the chipsets. With this 2021 flagship chipset, the company is using the 5nm node.
The Snapdragon 888 chipset will also deliver the “most significant upgrade” in GPU performance. So Qualcomm is also updating its Snapdragon Elite Gaming suite of gaming optimizations to support 144Hz displays. the chipset will also have the sixth-generation AI engine. This has a redesigned Hexagon module which will give sizeable gains in AI-related use cases.
While all these are just the tip of the iceberg to the capabilities of the powerful Snapdragon 888 chipset. We will get to know the real power of this chipset when it comes out in the devices next year.
The company also announced 14 manufactures that have already signed up for this chipset. This includes:
- Black Shark
Surprisingly, Samsung wasn’t on the list. So the upcoming Galaxy S21 series will probably not come with this chipset.
Meanwhile, OnePlus 9 is coming out in March 2021. So we will have to wait until then to see this powerful chipset in a device.
