WhatsApp now has disappearing message, like Snapchat!

You might have been hearing about the rumors and the upcoming features of WhatsApp lately. And the disappearing messages feature has caught more eyes. This feature appeared on Snapchat first, later used by many apps. And to be honest, it is one of the top security features. Previous rumors and the recent official announcement has made this fact pretty clear that the feature will come soon. But now you can enjoy the feature, as WhatsApp is rolling this feature on the stable channel.

The feature page, which recently popped up, has the following description.

You can send messages that disappear on WhatsApp by enabling disappearing messages. Once enabled, new messages sent in the individual or group chat will disappear after seven days. The most recent selection controls all messages in the chat. This setting won’t affect messages you previously sent or received in the chat. In an individual chat, either user can turn disappearing messages on or off. In a group chat, only group admins can turn disappearing messages on or off.

To make the chats disappear, all you have to do is tap on individual chats or group chats, and turn the feature on. Once enabled, the messages will disappear after seven days and is not customizable. Although time limit is long, but in case you forget opening the app, the message will disappear.

But there are certain caveats to this feature.

  1. Your messages will disappear in seven days. Preview will still be visible in notifications
  2. When replied to a normal message, the message is sent as a quote. However, if you replied to a disappearing message, the quote will still remain.
  3. If forwarded without turning on a disappearing message, the message remains.
  4. If a backup is created before messages disappear, the messages will remain in the backup. However, when restoring the backup, the disappearing messages will be deleted.

This is also for the forwarded messages. Forwarded messages might not delete after seven days.

To enable this, all you have to do is, tap on the chat, then on its name, and then tap ‘Disappearing Messages’, and then select ‘On’. For more, you can visit the feature page here.

At the time of writing, the feature is not present in Beta channel in India as well.
