The company kept its promise of announcing at least five new devices for its annual August Samsung Unpacked Event, which included the Galaxy Note 20 models with the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the Galaxy Buds Live, the Galaxy Tab S7, Galaxy Watch 3 and more. Samsung broadcast the event live from South Korea following similar events by companies including Apple, which moved events online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Finally the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is out of the bag. It’s the successor to last year’s Galaxy Fold, with a new camera system, larger external monitor and hole-punch cameras giving the current iteration a much more sleek and streamlined look than the original.
The new Galaxy Z Fold 2 — renamed to suit the Galaxy Z Flip and Z Flip 5 G launched earlier this year — marks the first major redesign for Samsung’s flagship foldable handset, and it aims to build on almost all of the original model’s shortfalls.
The Z Fold 2 has a 6.2-inch full-size screen that covers the entire front of the handset, making it much more functional without the need to open a bigger display. There is also a bigger key panel, at 7.6 inches. And the unusual, notched corner that marred the top-right corner of the flexible interior panel is also gone , replaced by a less obtrusive hole-punch camera taking up much less room on the folding OLED frame, which now operates at a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. With the Z Fold 2 expected to feature the new Snapdragon 865 Plus processor from Qualcomm, the internal specs are getting a boost, too.
The overall phone is smaller (it’s 6 mm thick) and has a smaller distance between the screens to make it easier to fit in your pocket. Samsung claims the hinge, too, has been re-engineered for greater durability. The new hinge also features what Samsung calls “a sweeper,” which uses elastic fibers to clean out the hinge from dust or debris to avoid display damage.
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will come in both the colors of “mystic black” and “mystic bronze,” along with a limited version of the Thom Browne. Samsung is not announcing a release date or price for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 today, though the company is promising more detail about the Z Fold 2 in a second event on September 1st, when preorders will also launch.
