Google Messages, the default SMS app for Pixel phones and RCS chat arbiter for those in the UK and France (or anyone else who wants in), rolls out a new image view user interface with new download and sharing Google Material Theme buttons.
Recently, Google Messages has been the focus of attention thanks to an all too simple trick that can allow RCS chatting on virtually any Android phone around the world. A big part of what makes RCS good is bypassing some of the SMS and MMS limitations, including image and video sizes, to make the experience more iMessage-like.
For sender and date information, the new media viewer switches from Roboto to Google Sans and forgets the back button at the left of the top bar for an x. It also zooms in on images and gifs not high-res enough to fill in the entire preview. The share and save buttons are dropped from the top bar in more interesting changes and can now be found in the bottom left corner. A more contemporary downward-facing arrow, depicting a download, has replaced the old save floppy disk.
