Latest Windows 10 Update Wiping Off User Data?

A couple of reports are claiming that the latest Windows 10 update is wiping off data such as documents, music, and pictures (via The Verge). These reports have appeared on Reddit and even Microsoft’s own support forums. The October Update (1809) has wiped off user data and many of the users haven’t been able to recover deleted files as well.

The solution? Locate and disable a group policy that deletes user profiles when they reach a certain age. This has to be done by running the gpedit command in the Windows search bar and navigating to Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/User Profiles and disabling the Delete user profiles older than a specified number of days on system restart feature.

The October update isn’t public yet so the only people experiencing these issues are the Fast Ring / Skip Ahead Insiders. It seems that, under given circumstances, not viable to update your PC and wait for Microsoft to address the issue.

We will give you an update once Microsoft responds.
