A new update for Samsung Galaxy S8 as well as Note 8 brings in GIF support for the Always On Display. With the GIF support, users will be able to set GIF images as their background and play it by double tapping it when using Always On Display. This feature is already available for Samsung Galaxy S9 but the latest update brings the same to Samsung Galaxy S8 and Note 8
Always On Display previously let users set an image as a background on their phone screen, which would display on the screen even when the phone is locked. This was limited to images, GIF files were treated as static images. But with the new update GIF file’s animation is displayed on AOD, which plays once when the phone goes into locked mode. To play it again, you have to tap the screen, which is possibly done to save battery consumption by the display.
To receive the new Always On Display update, open the Galaxy Apps store on your phone, tap the three-dot button on the top right, select My Apps, then select Update. Find and tap Always On Display in the list and hit the update button.
