Today, Google has started rolling out the Android 8.0 Oreo update though the OTA (Over-The-Air) for Nexus 6P users, it might still take some time for the update to reach all Nexus 6P owners.
The Nexus 6P and 5X will still receive security updates
Even if Google cut off timeline for the Nexus and Pixel updates is worrying news, not all major updates will end. Two years after they were available at the Google Store for sale, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P will stop receiving automatic operating system updates. However, the devices will still receive security updates for 12 more months.
Even if most of us feel that the clock is ticking for these devices, Google did not officially announce they will no longer update the Nexus line. On the support page, the message is that after September 2017, there will be no guaranteed Android version update. Therefore Google has yet to make an official announcement.
The developer page explains, “This page contains OTA binary image files that allow you to manually update your Nexus or Pixel device. This has the same effect of flashing the corresponding factory images, but without the need of wiping the device.”
