Windows 10 Mobile is available for the public since a few months and while Microsoft has brought up a nice operating system, there is still this app gap. This might lead to more pinned websites for some users, however in Windows 10 Mobile pinned websites are not very nice to look at. In fact it’s just the thumbnail of a website which is then looking pretty ugly. In my country for example, there is not any public transport app for Windows 10 Mobile so I’m using the mobile website to keep up with that.
Now there is an app in the Windows store which is making pinned websites look a lot better. The app is called ‘Web Tiles’ and can be downloaded in the Windows Store for free. It uses the share feature from Microsoft Edge. If there is a website you want to have on your startscreen, be sure to have a nice icon, image or whatever artwork from the site, and you are ready to go.
The app itself includes some pretty nice instruction how to use it, but I’ll sum up things here for you to get an impresion on that:
- Open the Website in Microsoft Edge
- Tap on the app bar on the bottom of the browser and choose ‘Share’ in the menu
- Choose Web Tiles as the sharing app.
- In Web Tiles click on ‘New Image’, adjust and resize it.
- Click on ‘Done’
That’s all you will have to do in order to pin a website to your startscreen through this app. If the image or icon you have chosen is not covering the whole tile, it will be transparent on the rest of the tile. Of course this is not a live tile but it nicely fits into your startscreen, depending on which image you are choosing. I have embed a few screenshots below to get you some more impressions of the app.
