How to: Fix ‘Check for updates’ in new Windows Store app

On the 16th of May Microsoft has released a new store app for Insiders on the fast ring, which brings a bug when checking for app updates, here is the fix.

Along with the last build of Windows 10 Mobile which Microsoft had rolled out two days ago, there came also an update for the windows store app. Build 14342 is the latest version of Windows 10 Mobile and is available for Windows Insiders on the fast ring, same counts for the new store app. A while back Microsoft had intruded such small preview programs which are run for single apps. Part of such an app preview program was also the maps app which has been rolled out to the public now, and currently the Windows Store app is such a preview program.

The updated version of the app can be downloaded only by Windows Insiders in the fast ring and is available for Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile. The UI has been greatly overhauled as well as the functionality in this version of the store, and makes a more universal impression now. However, unfortunately the app does also have a small bug on mobile and desktop device which will not let you download any app updates.

How to fix the Windows Store

If you click on ‘Check for updates’ in the store on your mobile device as well as on your desktop PC or tablet, nothing will happen. Except that it will display the recent activity, there the store shows you all the apps and updates which have been installed recently, which is also a new feature by the way. Though it will not show you any updates which are available for your installed apps, so here e four steps how you can fix that:

  1. Click on ‘Check for updates’ in the store app on your mobile device and wait until the recent activity appears.
  2. Browse through the recent activity and click on the store app.
  3. Once you have clicked on the store app, let it load and then click on update underneath the app tile.
  4. Update gets installed, store gets re-launched.
  5. Click on ‘Check for updates’ again.

This bug exists on mobile devices as well as desktop PC’s and tablets. On mobile devices this fix is working quite nice, however I have tried this on my PC and it was not working right away then. Though when I let it rest a bit and tried to open the Windows Store app a bit later again it worked. So just try it on all of your devices with the new store app installed.
