Apple is offering a pretty nice keyboard for their iOS devices already. However, if you feel any features missing in the standard keyboard from Apple you might want to have a look at Microsoft’s Word Flow keyboard. The keyboard is available to download as an app in the iOS app store and was available as a beta service previously. Starting with today the app is out of beta and can be downloaded from the app store by everyone.
In Microsoft’s own mobile smartphone operating system, the company had introduced a Word Flow keyboard with Windows Phone 8.1. There the company has done good job with the keyboard, it even broke some records in case of fast writing and it is very intuitive to use. Though the keyboards doesn’t have all the features which Microsoft has now implemented in the iOS app.
In the iOS app there is for example the ability to change the background image of the keyboard. Android, iOS and Windows 10 Mobile are offering very good stock keyboards, however none of them has got the ability to change the background. Implemented in the app is a library with background images and textures to customize the keyboard. There is also a nice one handed mode which can be also seen on the screenshots in the iOS app store. It allows you to access the whole keyboard only with your thumb. Beside Textures and background images, the one handed mode is another thing which no stock keyboard does have so far implemented this way.
Microsoft is currently following a new universal strategy, this means also bringing their services to other platforms. It is not sure if Microsoft will bring these keyboard features for Windows with the Anniversary update, but the company is expected to at least release an Android app of the word flow keyboard.
