Yesterday there was a drama because of HERE apparently retiring their service for Windows although HERE continues to be available through the official maps app from Microsoft and today everyone is excited about the completely overhauled Twitter app. Yes it can be very emotional and exhausting to be a Windows enthusiast but that’s maybe exactly what people are appreciating. However, today Twitter has finally published an update for their twitter client, which brings the app to version 18.104.22.168. Since Twitter is a universal Windows app the update is not only available for your phone but also on your PC and tablet.
The app is designed pretty well and beside that it adds support for the latest features of the social network. Those of you who wanted to experience the ‘Moments’ feature on their mobile devices can do that now for example. The app is also bringing a dark and a light theme, though you have to change the them of your operating system for light to dark or vice versa in order to change the theme of the app. This can not be handled via settings yet. The settings of the new app are a little bit problematic anyway. The ‘about’ and ‘notifications’ sections in the settings are native settings, however privacy and the rest of settings seem to be just a web wrapper from the mobile website. Hopefully the company will now update the app on a regular basis so that we can get good-looking and feature complete settings soon.
Apart from that, as mentioned already, the app is bringing almost everything a standard user needs. The app can finally give you notifications again, you can check your timeline, send direct messages and interact with tweets from others. That’s it, there are no extras at this time but the app is covering all basic features pretty well. Here is a list of features which is supported by the latest version of the universal app:
- New moments feature
- Windows 10 Mobile support
- Removal of people hub integration
- Adaptive scaling
- Gif support
- Group chat support
- video support
- Muting support
- Pull to refresh
- New Dark theme for Desktop
Very interesting is the adaptive ‘scaling thing’ which basically means that the app does now better react to different sizes of screens and tries to fit the whole screen everywhere. Though it is said to see the people hub integration being removed, at least I liked that feature a lot but might be also the only one. Beside these outstanding features there have been added a few other important things like the ability to make group chats and a few other things.
Now where we have talked about features you want probably see what the new app does look like, so here are a few screenshots of the new app.
This should be enough to give you an impression what the new universal Twitter app is about. Feel free to drop me a comment below with your opinion on this new app. Do you think there are still some important features missing, what do you think about the removed people hub integrations? Stay tuned for more Microsoft related news in the future.
