Google and Apps for the Windows ecosystem that is a story not all Windows enthusiasts like to talk about. Since the two companies, Google and Microsoft, are constantly in a fight, there is not much hope to get support from Google in any way on Microsoft platform, except the Google search app which is more or less available for Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile. However, the best example for the great support of Google was the YouTube app which has been developed by Microsoft and then was removed from the store since Google didn’t like the idea of not being needed for an app.
That said, it is quite obvious that if you find an app for a Google service in the Windows App Store it is a third-party app most of the time. There is for example a Google Maps app in the store and now this service is joined by the Client for Hangouts App. This app is, as the description says, in alpha and brings the Google Hangout service to your Windows Phone, Tablet and PC. Thankfully the developer of this new chat client has made the app with the new Universal Windows developer tools which means the app is available on all platforms where you are currently using Windows 10, so that you can stay connected everywhere.
Like most of the Windows 10 universal apps, this hangout client features a hamburger menu at left hand side of the app where you can switch between your contacts and chats. The app allows you to attach images to you chats, and use some emoticons so that you can share all your daily emotions with your Google contacts. Apart from the chats and contacts, also the settings and your account details can be found in the lower left in the hamburger menu.
In settings you are able to set a ‘do not disturb’ mode which is pretty nice and you can set you status there. If you tap on your account you are able to sign out, however, at this time it is not possible to use a second Google account with this app, in case you are using one account for your business and a private one.
The app says this is still an alpha and you can definitely see that here and there but overall this is a very nice app to stay in contact with all your Google contacts via Google Hangouts. The developer looks promising and I guess we will be able to see new updates with new features and bug fixes soon.
What do you think about this Hangout client, are you even using Google Hangouts? Drop me a comment below with your opinion on this and stay tuned for more Microsoft related news in the future.
