Microsoft has not officially announced Windows 10 Mobile yet and though the company has released three devices which are shipped with the operating system and has just announced another Lumia phone which will be shipped with Windows 10 Mobile. According to current rumors Windows 10 Mobile is expected to hit the market on the 29th of February and will then be available to download for all phones currently running Windows Phone 8.1. However not only Microsoft but also third-party manufacturers are publishing new phones with Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 10 Mobile.
Beside the NuAns Neo, the VAIO Phone Biz or the HP Elite X3 which is expected to be launched at the Mobile World Congress next week, there is also a small Spanish manufacturer which is now in the Windows Mobile community. Mainly focusing on Android devices the company has also decided to release a smartphone shipped with Windows 10 Mobile, the company is generally known as Funker.
Back at the beginning of February, the 2nd of February to be more specific, the manufacturer has release its first phone running Windows 10 Mobile. Although Funker might not be a very famous smartphone company, the W5.5 Pro does definitely have some features to convince its buyers, additionally the phone is available for a very low price.
So let’s go through the general specifications of the phone. It comes with a, as the name suggests, 5.5″ screen which has a resolution of 720 x 1280. Inside the phone there is a Quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor paired with 2GB of RAM to bring enough power for daily smartphone use. While this is not enough for Continuum Mode it should be fairly enough for most people who are no hardcore smartphone gamers. Speaking of hardcore gaming, the phone does have 16GB of internal storage which is not that much but gladly the have thought of a MicroSD Card slot which brings the ability to expand the in-build storage. Definitely enough will be the 2600mAh battery which is build into the device, first tests with the phone are suggesting that this is a really powerful battery resulting in about two days use without charging. Though I have to get a closer look on power consumption before I can give any facts about that, results for that will follow in my hands on. The camera on the phone is not bad either with a 13MP Lens on the back and a 5MP Lens on the front. Sure it is not a Carl Zeiss lens like you might be used to from Microsoft devices but it is pretty good though. To get you connected in all imaginable ways the phone is supporting Bluetooth 4.0 A2DP/HFP/OPP, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, 4G LTE connectivity (bands 3/7/8/20).
Let’s come to the more surprising specifications of the Funker W5.5 Pro. Since most phones in the Windows ecosystem are produced by Microsoft it is very seldom to get a waterproof phone running Windows 10 Mobile, though if this would be a dealbreaker for you, the W5.5 Pro might be the right choice for you. Apart from that the phone is only 6.9mm thin which makes it thinner than the Apple iPhone 6s Plus, here are the full measurements of the phone: 154.8 x 78.6 x 6.9mm; 135g;
All in all the specifications of the phone do sound pretty good and you can get all this for just 239€ without shipping. That’s why I decided to get me one of these, on the one hand to support a small European smartphone company and on the other hand because I wanted to see how such a phone is performing in day-to-day use. Below you can have a look at my unboxing of the Funker W5.5 Pro and my first impressions of the phone.
The phone is making a pretty solid first impression, although the volume control and the lock button are wiggling around a bit. Apart from that I have not noticed anything which would be very annoying or anything. I’ll try to collection some impressions on the phone will then do a hands on video of the phone. Feel free to drop me a comment below with your opinion on the phone and stay tuned for more videos on the Funker W5.5 Pro. Feel free to give me some feedback on the video and let me know if you want to see anything specific about the phone in the next video.
