Exactly one month ago, we reported on the controversial decision from Lenovo to phase out the Motorola name, and stick with just using “Moto” for it’s high end mobile devices. Today, some new images were leaked that suggest that Lenovo truly meant “high end”.
New images from HelloMotoHK have surfaced, showing what to appear to be 3 different colored variants of an all-metal “Moto” device, as well as some new backplate variants for a supposed new Moto G. If these images are to be believed, I have to say, the 2016 Moto X looks pretty damn good.
There has been quite a lot of outcry recently about the current trend of slim, all metal devices, but personally I think it’s great. Having a unibody metal device myself, the feel of aluminum and other high end metals in your hand is fantastic. A majority of this outcry is due to the fact that many of these devices are conforming to an “iPhone-like” design style (looking at you, HTC One A9), but many devices have still managed to create their own appeal, such as the initially hated but now generally well adopted “visor” on the Nexus 6p. If these images are any representation of the final iteration of the Moto X 2016, it seems to capture it’s own design variance relatively well, though we will just have to wait and see.
Though there have been rumors about Lenovo ridding of the low end “Moto G” devices, the images provided seem to suggest otherwise. A likely possibility is that Lenovo will re-brand the Moto G under it’s own name, leaving it mostly the same in terms of build and quality. If this is true, this is great for the low-end market in the US, as there have been few devices that have captured price to performance quite as well.
As of now there haven’t been any reports on any major Motorola releases at MWC later this month, but it’s still pretty exciting to see how Lenovo’s recent acquisition will affect the products.
