As stated by the company, Microsoft is preparing to sell the Lumia 950 in the US through AT&T this November. Though despite the exclusivity, the company promised to make the Lumia 950 and 950 XL in its stores unlocked.
“While there was interest across the board from U.S. operators, currently we’ve made the decision to have AT&T carry the Lumia 950, and then sell both the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL unlocked through our own channel in Microsoft stores.”
Many have expressed desire for these phones, but are left questioning the decision to exclusively sell only one of their flagships through only one of the US major carriers. There seems to also be some confusion as to whether or not the Lumia 950 would be available unlocked in Microsoft stores or just sold through the AT&T-locked version.
There seems to be a bit of hope as both flagships are listed on the Microsoft store website in their unlocked variants as well as the AT&T-model Lumia 950. This seems to indicate that both phones will, in fact, be available completely unlocked in the US. Furthermore, the Lumia 950 (as well as the 950XL) both support T-MobileUS 3G and 4G LTE bands (including band 12), which is good news for T-Mobile customers.
This comes as a slice of good news, despite the rumors swirling that Verizon is actively blocking both devices from working on its network. Salty much? We don’t blame them, as T-Mobile CEO John Legere has openly defended his position that Microsoft dropped the ball on their new flagships by only giving them to AT&T, stating on Twitter that “If Microsoft wakes up, we’ll talk about T-Mobile carrying”.
What do you think? Are you interested in picking up an unlocked Lumia 950 or 950 XL?
