Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10549; the good, the bad, the ugly

Windows 10 Mobile

Microsoft’s new Windows 10 Mobile build comes with a caveat

This morning, Microsoft VP for the Windows & Devices Group, Gabriel Aul, announced on twitter that a new build is available for Fast Ring Insiders. Here’s what’s new in this preview:

  • Cortana can now be used for Insiders in Japan, as well as for users in Canada and Australia (English)

  • Messaging app text box can now be expanded when entering text. (Skype integration to come in a later build)

  • Support for the latest Unicode emojis, adding some diversity to the ways users express themselves

  • Lumia 1020 users can now rejoice! Lumia Camera is back, so you can once again tap into the full power of  your PureView cameras

  • Various bug fixes

As per any preview build, there are plenty of bugs that come crawling out of the cracks once old ones are squashed. Here are some of the known bugs in the new build:

  • After upgrading, a few apps may be missing. If you notice this, reboot your phone and they should return.

  • After rebooting your phone, notifications won’t appear until you unlock your device for the first time. They should then appear regularly

  • Calls won’t work on Skype for Business, WhatsApp, and other similar VoIP apps. A workaround is to uninstall and reinstall these apps.

Gabriel also noted a major bug that the team noticed at the last minute: users upgrading for the previous build will get stuck at a black screen when installed. Therefor it is suggested that you revert back to Windows Phone 8.1 using the Windows Device Recovery Tool, and upgrade straight to 10549. Frankly I’m not surprised that users have to once again reset their devices (#InsiderProblems), but we know what we signed up for.
