This younger sibling has been overshadowed by the Lumia 950 and 950 XL, but still proves it can play with the big boys
Today’s Windows 10 Devices announcement was surely packed with a lot of hard hitters from Microsoft, but one device was barely noticed among the hoopla and that’s the Lumia 550. On stage, it was only mentioned in passing, while the focus was turned towards its older brothers, the Lumia 950 and 950 XL, and that’s understandable. We’ve gotten plenty of low/mid end models from Microsoft over the past 2 years and this device seemed to just fall in line with the rest. Everyone was hoping for and expecting new long-awaited flagships, so the 550 was somewhat of an afterthought. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a good phone.
The Lumia 550 sports a 4.7 inch HD display, and is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 210 processor, with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable memory. On the back is a 5MP camera, and a 2MP selfie camera sits on the front. The battery, at 2100mAh, is decent for a device of this stature, and the 550 runs Windows 10 Mobile out of the box.
This device is really meant to replace the Lumia 640, as opposed to the 530/540, as the go-to affordable Windows 10 Mobile LTE device, making the OS more accessible to various markets. If the past is any indication of how things may go, it’s likely we should see sales of this device skyrocket as users warm up to Microsoft’s new and improved mobile OS.
We should expect the device to go on sale in Europe this December for roughly the equivalent of $140USD, and will be more widely available in 2016.
