There have been rumors that we would see a price increase with the OnePlus 2 when compared to its predecessor, and today we’ve gotten somewhat of a confirmation from OnePlus CEO Pete Lau. “Honestly, it’s never been about the price. We simply make the best smartphones we can, and we go from there… I can promise that the OnePlus 2 will be priced under 450USD.”
That’s somewhat good news for fans who have been looking forward to buying the smartphone. The OnePlus One was known for bringing killer specs to a price point previously unheard of at that tier, and the expectation has been that the company would follow suit with the successor. $450 is quite a jump from the $299 price tag of the current 64GB OnePlus One (the 32GB model going for $249), but keep in mind this is only a price ceiling, one that they may not even reach though it’s possible they may come close to it with a higher-end model OnePlus 2 (perhaps 128GB of internal storage?).
Features of the upcoming flagship have been teased over the past few weeks, such as an advanced fingerprint scanner, USB Type-C and the Snapdragon 810v2.1 chip, features that basically justify the price jump. But OnePlus is determined to stick to its roots and provide a (relatively) affordable device for users. Rumors also indicate that the company will launch a OnePlus One Lite, as well as a 3rd unknown device.
The OnePlus launch has been scheduled for July 27th, but until then we can look forward to the company’s next teaser announcement tomorrow (July 7th).
