Stream YouTube Videos in 1080p With Window Phone 8.1

A quick tip here, especially for anyone with a Lumia 1520 or Lumia Icon. Prior to Windows Phone 8.1 there has been no easy or obvious way to stream videos from YouTube in 1080p. Apps like MetroTube and MyTube have allowed 720p streaming but it is now relatively easy to watch your favourite YouTube videos in Full HD.

Due to the improvements to the web browser on Windows Phone 8.1, currently available to install as a Developer Preview, you can now use the YouTube website in desktop mode almost as fully as you can on a full desktop computer.

So long as you have changed the settings on Internet Explorer under the “Website Preferences” to Desktop Version (see picture above) you will be able to play videos inline. As you would find on the full version of Internet Explorer, in the bottom right of the video screen is a Cog Symbol which lets you choose the quality of the stream.

This now gives Lumia 1520/Icon users a chance to really make the most out of that beautiful display by watching 1080p videos. You can of course set it to any available stream.

Another quick tip on the desktop YouTube Site is to make the videos go into full screen; As you would on a PC, double clicking the inline video box will make it fill your Windows Phone Screen.

I hope you found this tip useful, and if you have any of your own, or any comments or questions, please leave them belowin the comments section.
