Return of the removable plate and all you need to know about Lumia 820 and 3D printing

5110Can’t believe it’s been 15 years already when Nokia first introduced to removable plates on Nokia 5110, allowing users to customize their mobile devices.

Last September Nokia introduced the AT&T exclusive Lumia 820, their first Windows Phone 8 device with a removable shell with or without wireless charging (Qi) capabilities.  These shells come in trendy colors (red, cyan, yellow, black and white) and can be purchased here.

Nokia has stepped up the customization game once again by introducing 3D Printing kit for Lumia 820.  If you have access to a 3D printer, you can create own specialized cover.  This link has all the information on 3D printing and it also features a conversation with John Kneeland, a Nokia community & developer manager.  John is a great guy we met at a Nokia sponsored Mobile Monday event in NYC last year.

I have contacted Tom Messett regarding the availability of a 3D printing kit for the Lumia 810 and Lumia 822.  He says ‘Nokia is starting with the Lumia 820 3D printing kit to gauge demand but more is planned’.

  1. I remember the London streets would be packed with little huts selling 5110 and 3310 cases. Pretty much anything you wanted could be found! Makes sense that in 2013 we can now make our own 🙂
