I started using smartphones pretty late in the game (April 2005).. my first smartphone was a candybar Sagem MyS7 that I imported from France. It came with a VGA camera and thats were it all started. Before that I always had a point and shoot near by.. However in the weeks and months that followed, i started using my phone to take pictures more often.
From VGA in myS-7, I moved to imate SPL which had a 2 meg camera and then a couple of HTC devices includeding Tytn II.. however it was the advent of Omnia i900 that true led me to think that carrying camera as well was pointless (most of the times). Sure i900 had a crappy 5 Meg camera. I then got HTC Mozart (it had Xenon flash) before using Lumia 800. With each device, there was always a focus on camera with a hope that they will perform eventually!!
When Nokia demonstrated the PureView tech using 808 (massive 41 meg camera), I was left speechless. Where was the Windows Phone with the same tech ? Time and again I was told wait it will happen.. well after waiting for a full year, information about Lumia 920 started to leak. What Nokia told us was that PureView will ship with Lumia but it will be different.. what do you mean different… 41 cut down to 8.7 you must be joking.. Can OIS + apeture make that big a difference to camera performance on phones ?
I have a D-SLR and I know about Apertures and Shutter speeds and a bit of OIS. I also know that use of flash tends to wash the natural colors and the picture isn’t that good. This is especially true when you are at home.. Inside the house, the lighting tends to be non-uniform and flash just spoils the fun. Disabling the flash causes longer exposures and picture is ruined.. either way you are stuffed. Enter the Lumia 920 (Thank you Nokia Connects for the 15 day trial). Its got a 2.0 aperture, IOS – is it going to perform ? lets see
Disclaimer: I have a daughter and a dog.. usually there is no time for going in the settings and trying various combinations.. some times even use to both hands is not possible. I will update this post with newer pictures soon.
I took a picture with lumia 800 and lumia 920 side by side.. flash switched off.

No gimmicks.. Look at the difference!!! I was amazed.. Later that evening, I took a few pictures just before my daughter was going to bed.. the background light is pink and flash is off. If i had used flash, the pictures would look different and not what you expected.
Here are a few
You might not believe me but this is massive.. I haven’t seen pictures taken by phone look that good.. this is my take on it. Here are some more pictures shot later.
What do you think of these ?
