According to reports Microsoft is working on an “Avoid the Ghetto App” which is simply a feature in your maps that would use local crime stats and not route you through high crime areas.
Microsoft says the app will use crime statistics to determine what parts of town are to be avoided. But it’s unclear where the data will come from and how it will be interpreted.
Microsoft has filed a patent for the app, but the actual product is unnamed and not available yet. But it has recently pick up the dubious nickname “Avoid the Ghetto App.”
While it seems like a great idea to me (who wants to get stuck in the shady part of strange town? Not me.) There are other who are up in arms about it. Stating that:
“It’s almost like gerrymandering,” said Dallas NAACP President Juanita Wallace. “It’s stereotyping for sure and without a doubt; I can’t emphasize enough, it’s discriminatory.”
Microsoft declined to comment, issuing a statement that said the company “does not comment on filed or awarded patents.”
Curious to see what you guys think.
